Frederic Malle launches home fragrances
Editions de Parfums, the exclusive fragrance company established by Frédéric Malle, is expanding into home fragrances.
“In this new adventure, I have chosen to work with perfumers or noses specialized in fine fragrances, as opposed to those in functional fragrance who would normally work on home fragrances,” explains Frédéric Malle. “A fragrance should become part of life without smothering it. The goal for this new home collection is to embellish the complex alchemy that makes up the odors of our world.”

The collection is comprised of nine scents many of which were developed using head space technology largely based on the work of the late Dr. Braja Mookherjee (Dr. Braja Mookherjee, vice president, global director, natural products research, International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF), died on Dec. 5 2002). Frédéric Malle invited perfumers Carlos Benaïm, a close colleague of Dr. Mookherjee, and Sophia Grosman, to work on scent development. Dominique Ropion, a long-time collaborator of Frédéric Malle at Editions de Parfums, was also very active in the project. The goal, combining creativity with technology, was to create as realistic scent “portraits” of flowers as possible for the home.

The scents are available as a candle, a machine diffuser, or both. The candles come in hand-blown glass jars with a signature Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle red detail but no logo or label. Thus, the graceful design can work unobtrusively with any décor. The composition o

The diffuser machine, called “Fleurs Mécaniques”, was developed in-house by Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle. It is a small, red, wireless cube which can be recharged. The machine silently diffuses the completely natural odor of a bouquet of flowers.
In addition to the candle and the "Fleurs Mécaniques", Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle is introducing Rubber Incense, a high-tech version of the classic French lavender sachet. Rubber Incense is a small sheet of 100% recyclable plastic rubber which has been permeated with fragrance using the patented Polyiff technique from I.F.F. to allow scent to be diffused for years without using electricity or refill. These are perfect for small spaces like closets, or cars.

The Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle home collection is now available in the company’s New York and Paris boutiques in November 2009, and online at EditionsdeParfums.com in December 2009. Candles range in price from $85 to $150. Rubber incense (a box of five sheets) is sold for $105, and Fleurs Mécaniques are sold for $380 with one complementary fragrance capsule. Each scent refill ranges in price from $70 to $100.

The Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle Home Collection Scents:

Un Gardénia la Nuit
Dominique Ropion, available as a candle or as a fleurs mécaniques.
The gardenia is one of Frédéric Malle’s favorite flowers. The resulting natural scent was based on the head space method of Dr. Braja Mookherjee.

1er Mai
Dominique Ropion, available as a candle or as fleurs mécaniques.
This near-reproduction of the fragrance of a cluster of lily of the valley is the result of working with historic formulas for the flower along with head space.

Rosa Rugosa
Carlos Benaïm, available as a candle and as a fleurs mécaniques.
The reconstitution of the dry, cold, astringent-like scent of these wild rose bushes which grow on the Atlantic coast was developed by Benaïm “au nez”, just by using his nose.

Rubrum Lily
Carlos Benaïm, available as a candle and as a fleurs mécaniques.
The ravishing perfume of a full bouquet of lilies which has dressed up rooms since the turn of the century: Floral, green, salty, and very spicy.

Jurassic Flower
Carlos Benaïm, available as a candle and as a fleurs mécaniques.
A unique floral fragrance thanks to top notes which resemble those of citrus fruits. A subtle lavender aspect and the sweetness of peaches complement this very natural smelling freshness.

Saint des Saints
Carlos Benaïm, available as a candle and rubber incense.
The work that Dr. Mookherjee did to record scents included the analysis of his favorite places. His analyses of Indian temples lead to the creation of this mystical fragrance.

Coffee Society
Carlos Benaïm, available as a candle.
This candle attempts to recreate that ephemeral odor of the living room after the end of a Parisian dinner. Among the perfumes of the home collection, this one most resembles a fragrance that is to be worn.

Russian Nights
Sophia Grosman, available as a candle.
This simple yet rich fragrance has notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, iris and sandalwood. It was designed to embody the suave warmth of long nights in Russia.

Santal Cardamome
Dominique Ropion, available as a candle.
While the team worked on the reconstitution of the scent of Sandalwood, they discovered the harmony of Sandalwood Cardamom and present it here in its raw and poetic beauty.
